Treatment Policies

Stimulant Medication Policy

At Bethany Center for Psychiatry & Behavioral Health, our priority is to provide safe, effective, and responsible mental health care. Our approach prioritizes long-term stability and minimizes the use of medications with dependency risks.

We do not prescribe stimulant medications, including but not limited to:

  • Adderall      (amphetamine salts)
  • Vyvanse      (lisdexamfetamine)
  • Ritalin      / Concerta (methylphenidate-based medications)

However, we do provide comprehensive ADHD evaluationsand offer evidence-based, non-controlled treatment options tailored to your needs.

What We Offer for ADHD Care

  • Thorough psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis
  • Non-stimulant medication management (e.g., FDA-approved alternatives)
  • Support for improving focus, organization, and daily functioning
  • Coordination  with therapists or primary care providers when appropriate

Why We Do Not Prescribe Stimulants

Stimulant medications are controlled substances that require additional regulatory monitoring and may not be appropriate for all telehealth settings. Our practice focuses on treatment approaches that prioritize safety, consistency, and long-term outcomes.

Important Information for Patients

  • We are happy to collaborate with your existing provider when appropriate.
  • Requests for stimulant prescriptions will not be accommodated by this   practice.

Benzodiazepine (Anxiety) Policy

Benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin) are not considered first-line treatments for anxiety disorders in this practice.

  • These  medications may be considered only in limited, short-term situations,  such as acute distress or crisis.
  • If prescribed, use will be time-limited and closely monitored, typically not exceeding 6–8 weeks.
  • Long-term benzodiazepine treatment is not provided at this practice.

Our primary treatment approach for anxiety includes:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Antidepressant medications (e.g., SSRIs, SNRIs, and other non-controlled options)

If you are currently taking a benzodiazepine:

  • We may evaluate your treatment and, when appropriate, develop a plan to      gradually reduce and transition to safer long-term options.
  • Collaboration with your current provider is encouraged when needed.

Insomnia / Sleep Disorders medications such as Ambien

Our approach to insomnia focuses on safe, non-habit-forming treatments:

  • Initial treatment emphasizes sleep hygiene and behavioral strategies
  • When medication is needed, we may use non-controlled options such as    trazodone, doxepin, or mirtazapine
  • Medications such as Ambien or other “Z-drugs” are generally avoided or used only short-term, when clinically appropriate

Opioids and Addiction Treatment

  • As a telepsychiatry practice, we do not prescribe opioid (narcotic) medications
  • We do not initiate Suboxone (buprenorphine) or induction or continue treatment
  • We do not prescribe or manage methadone treatment, including tapers or transitions

We strongly recommend working with an in-person addiction specialist or treatment program for substance use care. We are happy to coordinate care with your existing providers.

Important Information for Patients

While our practice limits the use of these medications, we offer effective non-controlled alternatives and will work with you to create a safe, personalized treatment plan that supports your long-term well-being.
